As moms, it can be so tough to find time to take care of ourselves. And who among us hasn’t made a New Year’s resolution to shed those extra holiday pounds? Instead of fretting about it, the MOMS Club of Louisburg, KS decided to do something about it – and launched a chapter Biggest Loser Challenge!
Modelled after NBC’s The Biggest Loser, the club runs its Biggest Loser Challenge from January 1 to March 31. The challenge is $10 to join and then $1 for every pound gained at weigh-in (every Monday morning). At the end of the challenge, the winner gets 75% of the pot, and the runner-up gets 25% — provides a bit of incentive to focus on proper food and exercise!
The club has a different focus every month.
- In January, they focus on food journaling, to make sure that moms are tracking what they’re eating – most of the moms use My Fitness Pal to help keep track.
- In February, they provide a daily workout challenge to make sure that they keep active – 100 jumping jacks, 100 sit-ups, etc.
- In March, they’re planning to use pedometers to encourage all moms to walk 10,000 steps a day – with a small prize for the mom who takes the most steps during the month!
Just like on the TV show, the club has a “Last Chance Workout” every Sunday evening, right before the Monday morning weigh-in. While they mix it up, usually the club does some kind of circuit training – lunges, pushups, squats and cardio mixed in. As a grand finale, they’re planning on a 5K around the local lake with mini-challenges scattered throughout. (While the club has been unable to convince Jillian Michaels to make a guest appearance during the Last Chance Workout, they’re holding out hope for the final challenge!)
The participating moms have found the challenge to be a fantastic way to get (and stay) fit – the support of their fellow moms really helps everyone to achieve their fitness goals. Good luck to the MOMS Club of Louisburg, KS as they head into the Biggest Loser home stretch!
